I returned to Mac after working for several years on various PC laptops. It’s a strange feeling—a mix of admiration and irritation. Clearly, the shortcuts are different. I really miss FAR (I even managed to run it on Mac under Wine, but it’s still slow there).

There’s one difficulty I’m struggling with and see no solution to. It is quite frustrating. I have two large external monitors in front of me, connected to a MacBook Pro. First of all, the laptop’s screen itself isn’t needed when there are external monitors, but you can’t turn it off! It lies a meter to my right, and if something pops up there, I usually don’t see it at all. If I close the lid, everything goes to sleep.

Secondly, when you have a multi-desktop mode (i.e., you can switch with Ctrl-left and Ctrl-right between Skype, mail, and the browser), if I’m on the desktop with Skype on one screen and one of the browser windows on the native MacBook screen, clicking on the browser in the taskbar does nothing – Skype remains, and the browser opens on this MacBook screen. If it weren’t open there, then I would see the window on the big screen.

Now, the twist. I need another window which is currently hidden on the neighboring desktop on the large monitor. But it shows me a window on the small screen of the MacBook. What do I do to switch between windows of the same application? I press Ctrl-`. This command only works for windows on the same monitor. That is, if there are two windows open in the browser on monitor 1 and one on monitor 2, you can’t switch to the second with pressing—it’s only possible to activate the windows from the first with the mouse. Thus, these windows from the first are not visible, as they are on desktop #1, whereas I am now on desktop #2 with Skype. Basically, the only option is to press long on the browser icon and then choose the right window there. You can’t do it from the keyboard. They really overdid it 😦

And I also terribly miss Visio. As well as a file manager with search capabilities within folders and subfolders for files containing a specific substring and quick viewing of the needed file.

For those following the #hybris topic: I published a new article on the blog today: I am sharing Groovy scripts that make working with hybris more convenient/easier/simplify troubleshooting.

Today is the fifth installment, another six scripts. One of them restarts the server, another translates FlexibleSearch into SQL, a third allows executing SQL instructions on the server, creating and printing table indexes, etc. This can be useful in case there is no access to the server, but it is very much needed.

It would be interesting to create a questionnaire that outputs the respondent’s presumed age based on their answers. It’s not difficult. If the respondent says that they have been familiar with computers since childhood, then ask whether they know what a manual scanner is, or what an LPT port is. About the magical connection between a pencil and a cassette tape. Matches and a clothespin. Ping pong balls and foil. What MK-60 is. What happens if you dial 09 on the phone. Or 100. What is a Tamagotchi. What color are Dendy cassettes. Whether it’s possible to play with stamps. Color Lines game. IDDQD. Myspace. The talking paperclip. Microsoft Hearts. Yellow Pages. Palm. Altavista and Ask.com. 5.25″. Montana. V32bis. Kerosene burner. Shaping and aerobics. Dumplings. Dropping eggs, merry chef, and ocean secrets. Puzzles. “Hopscotch”. Jimmy-Jimmy. White roses. Ricardo Folly, CC Catch, Toto Cutugno and Sandra. Verónica Castro. Hair clips. Blue inks. Modern Talking. A fine for not rewinding. Beverly Hills and Monty Python. Five kopecks and chalk. Milk in triangular packets. A carrying bag hung out the window. Slide films. Pine tar. Carbide. Little devils made of wire and angelfish from drip bags… Fixer, Unibrom, and gloss enhancer. Lomo. Flexi discs. Nature observation diary. Fox hunting. Darts from needles. Rex, Mole and Lolek & Bolek. Kama and Desna. Matchstick houses. Rhodope mountains. Who recognized everything?)

By the way, a great text on the topic: https://ulpressa.ru/2013/11/02/detyam-60-70-80-h-godov-posvyashhaetsya/

While the pilaf is cooking in the multicooker, I found an awesome video from a dude who got obsessed and restored the operating algorithms of the multicooker in various modes. Before the video, I thought that there were also scales somehow built in (the gadget on which the inner pot is placed is vertically movable and somewhat resembles scales) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yImYOI4MWSA

Today, on my way back from work, and halfway there (the second ten minutes), I got caught in a heavy downpour. Everything got completely soaked. Well, on the way, I was watching YouTube, some channel about chess. My phone is waterproof, so nothing to soak really. But here’s what I noticed. The iPhone’s touch doesn’t freak out because of the water on it. It managed perfectly even with flowing streams and drumming drops. After the Samsung Note 4, which was dangerous to handle with wet hands, this is just happiness.

Are all modern displays like this? Has anyone else been caught in the rain with the latest Samsung?
