For rapid prototyping, we are missing something like this:

A metal plate with elongated slots inside, which can be used to fasten this thing to others of different sizes and configurations. Essentially, it’s akin to a children’s construction set. However, typical children’s construction sets are made of cheap aluminum or flexible plastic, which makes the structure easily bendable, and it’s impossible to create anything serious from such parts. Plus, they are usually not even fully sold. I have a whole box of Lego Mindstorm ev3 nearby. Lego constructions tend to be quite shaky, and that’s not easily fixed, but you can buy additional parts, you can reinforce it by increasing the number. Plus, the things I’m looking for could be bought in sizes and types needed for a specific prototype.
