On Monday, an article about support for Japanese and Chinese languages will be released. Still figuring things out – I’m blown away by the Japanese.

Since the 17th century, the character 極 in Japanese has meant 10^48 (1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000). And there are individual characters for all smaller numbers in increments of 10,000 (because for all the numbers in between, a different notation can be used, within the scale of 10,000).

One of the meanings of this character is “very ordinary” 🙂

I, along with Nadezhda Shulga, have just produced our third cover page in the local newspaper. Nadya handles the drafts, while I edit and help out with small details. I also do a bit of “moonlighting” as a photographer: all photos accompanying the articles are mine. Unlike my blog, this local newspaper covers a wide range of very localized topics. Whether to install solar panels, what to do with a problematic intersection, the benefits of the farmers’ market, the current state of schools. Besides being simply interesting, this venture allows me to better understand the place and the people with whom we share this space, and, of course, it helps improve my language skills.

Yesterday, we released an article about charity dinners hosted by a former CIA officer every month. People gather in an Irish pub, all very homely. A portion of the bill goes to help families of law enforcement, the CIA, or soldiers deployed to hot spots.

At the dinner, we met Bob Shaun, aged 99. A veteran of three wars (WWII, Korea, and Vietnam), and a participant in D-Day. We also met sapper Rob Jones. He lost both legs in Afghanistan, and rode his bike across America on prosthetics, covering 5,000 miles. He also ran 31 marathons in 31 days across 31 different cities, and in 2012, he won a bronze medal at the Paralympics in London. He is currently running for Congress in Virginia.

That’s how we live 🙂 The full newspaper is available in PDF at mcleanconnection.com and greatfallsconnection.com.

Colleagues, if any of you understands full-text search in Chinese and Korean, please ping me. Recommendations are welcome too.

Quite surprised by the lack of information online. There’s stuff on Japanese, but virtually nothing on Chinese. Only the problem with word segmentation is somewhat discussed (Japanese has it too, but with slightly different specifics). But surely, that can’t be the only challenge?

The American entertainment industry has one noticeable aspect: they do not aim to keep prices low, but for the high price charged, they deliver 150%. Almost without exception, the feeling of “it was worth it” wasn’t fully appreciated until the trip. We couldn’t get around all of Hershey Park in just one full day. But what we did manage to do was a great success. I really hope that my beloved family, Elizaveta Alieva (Liza), who turned 18 today, and Masha Alieva, who performed quite well last week and received a medal, enjoyed it all.

Published a new article on hybrismart about SAP Cloud Platform Integration (SCPI). It is an iPaaS, a cloud integration platform. Generally used as an ESB, but unlike other products, it is closer to SAP’s cloud products, including SAP Commerce Cloud (hybris). In the hybris community, there is knowledge about SCPI, so I am addressing that gap 🙂
