Hurricane Dorian is currently approaching Florida. I came across how they are named, and it’s quite unusual. There’s a pre-prepared list of names, with each successive name starting with the next letter of the alphabet. Each season starts with A. If they run out of letters, they move on to Greek ones. Names repeat every six years, but! if a hurricane turns out to be destructive and many people suffer, its name is retired and is never used again. Two years ago, Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate were retired. Female and male names alternate, as do the years that start with male and female names. Now it’s Dorian, starting with a D, so it’s the 4th. This year, there are also Olga and Tanya, but it probably won’t get to them. 15th and 17th.
Someone really got into it, huh?
