Came across an interesting hypothesis. A journal from 1849 (but the hypothesis appears in many places) suggests that Cinderella’s slippers were not made of glass but were essentially UGG boots. In French, the words vair and verre sound the same, plus there is the tale of Rhodopis, recorded by Strabo in his “Geography” about a Greek girl who married the king of Egypt – this tale is considered one of the earliest versions of “Cinderella” – and it specifically features sandals, with no mention of what they are made from, but definitely no glass. It’s hard, of course, to imagine how one might accidentally drop an UGG boot on a staircase, yet as we see, she managed it.
