A mosquito’s proboscis is not a single needle, but consists of six long “blades” that function as the lower and upper jaws.
Two of them, called maxillae or upper jaws, are equipped with numerous tiny needles, a sort of teeth, which penetrate under the skin. The other “blades” or “drills” — the mandibles — lower jaws — meanwhile hold the edges of the incision open, preventing them from closing.
The sixth needle is named the hypopharynx, through which the mosquito injects saliva containing certain substances that cause the blood to flow; these also contribute to the itching after an insect bite.
