Watched “The Platform”. “There are three types of people: those above, those below, and those who fall”. A heavy, slightly unpleasant, atmospherically creepy movie, but — irresistible. The main question is — what is better, to try to convince others of the power of solidarity and fairness, or to use force and thereby make them accept a fair share? An excellent allegorical film on class inequality and the view of all this “from above” and “from below”. Highly recommend to all thinkers.

I’m listening to a new episode by Pivovarov about thousands of Russians stuck abroad right now. When I arrived in Mexico on March 16, I received a letter that our offices were closed. And I hadn’t bought a return ticket – I planned to do so locally. So I open the booking system, and it shows me tickets back to the USA starting from $10000 and up. I got a bit anxious and went to sleep.

The next day, the locals told me those were in Mexican pesos. How? It was a dollar sign! They replied that it’s not a dollar sign but the sign for Mexican pesos. They have one vertical stick, not two. Actually, it doesn’t really matter how many sticks the US or even the Canadian dollar has. Besides, it’s believed that the dollar sign originally came from the peso.

In the end, I flew back a week later for less than $200. I was supposed to stay another week, but common sense prevailed.

It would be interesting to create a virtual chart of industries, overlaid onto two axes: “covid impact (right now)” (ranging from -100 to 100) and “covid impact (in the future).”

For example, for barbershops and fitness clubs the impact right now is high (closed), but in the future everything will be as it was. E-commerce sees high impacts in the opposite direction (sales), but in the future it will be better than before, as more people switch to it.

It would be a very convenient tool for career guidance and figuring out where to get money 😉

Interesting facts unearthed. In the USA – ~10 million flights per year, transporting 1 billion passengers to/from 13,000 airports, of which about 4,700 are public, the rest are private. In Russia, about 800,000 flights, ~120 million passengers per year, of which about 70% are domestic, and 30% are international. Thus, the USA exceeds Russia by 8.5 times in passenger flow, and by 86 times in the number of airports.
