I wonder why nobody has tried to conduct an experiment to create a completely disconnected subnet on Facebook with robots that mimic communication and browsing friend feeds, with detailed logging of everything for subsequent analytics? Start with around 500-1000 “people”. Use real posts (which can be taken from another social network, first checking that it hasn’t yet appeared on FB) and perform full scanning of post outputs and recommendations for each of the 500-1000 participants. This would yield big data that could be made publicly available for processing by anyone interested. Technically, it’s not complicated or costly, right? There are farms for clicking posts, but they are not disconnected from the external world, and properly conducting experiments is not feasible.

I did it! 😉 Yesterday, we went to Board and Brew to play some board games. It’s a place where you have a thousand games to choose from, and you pay $5 for entry plus whatever else for “cookies.” We pulled the “Santiago” game off the shelf and enjoyed playing it with four players. It took us half an hour just to figure out the rules. Liked it. Afterwards, I looked online to buy one for home—turns out it costs a whopping $120. Had to make it myself 😉

As for expenses—just the tokens ($3) and foam board ($3). It took me two hours to glue everything together, cut, and turn into what’s shown in the photo.

In winter, our roads are treated with a salt solution. Everything is treated—anything that a car might theoretically drive on and a person might walk on. As a result, everything turns white. Next weekend it’s going to be plus 12 degrees, so it will be possible to wash the car. But here’s what’s interesting: both the roads for cars and the footpaths are absolutely not slippery, even though 100% of the cars are on summer tires. Yesterday it was minus ten degrees, and even sudden braking is no different from braking in summer. The same was true in Moscow, they treat the roads with a similar nastiness, but it always used to be slippery. Another point—there’s absolutely no dirt. In summer, its absence is understandable: different soil plus roads are built smarter. But in winter! Even when there’s snow, there is none of that unpleasant slush that ruins shoes and trousers. School was cancelled again today, as it was supposed to rain, and the temperature was around zero. We’ll see;)

Great movie, and, as it turned out, banned in Belarus. In “City of God,” non-professional actors from Brazilian favelas were cast, including from that very troubled district. Highly recommend watching it.

Found a funny bug (or whatever it is) on iOS. When opening an app (any app), it displays some random time. And it’s the same for apps installed at different times. Look at the time in the video

There’s one grammatical norm that just hardly ever fits into the brain accustomed to thinking in Russian. Even after living here for two years. It’s the intuitively correct placement of articles. The rule is simple, but the brain still doesn’t apply it unconsciously; instead, it stumbles for a few milliseconds and quite often inserts the wrong one, because the decision must be made in real time. Specifically, the problem is with non-countable nouns. For instance, if you want to say Officials indicated that (the?) evidence obtained through undercover operations… there’s no need for an article (actually). Or in such a context – “hydrogen is (an article?) dangerous gas” you kind of understand that an article is needed, but then again, you can’t count gas. But when it comes to saying I need (a?) permission, it feels right to say “Ineedpermission”, but out pops “IneedApermission” because there was no time to think.

By the way, watch the first episode of the fourth season of Black Mirror. “I was just gonna fix a coffee”, “wide berth”, “don’t do her head in” and a bunch of other expressions that were absolutely new to me. But the episode itself is wonderful. And also check out Hang the DJ, very much so.
